Post-purchase survey that changes the next order.
The moment after checkout is the most honest a customer will ever be with you. Use it to learn who the order is really for, why they bought, and what nearly stopped them.
Turn a completed order into a usable customer.
Shopify tells you a customer bought two bags of Lion's Mane and a Reishi tincture. It cannot tell you the tincture was a gift for their mother, that they bought because a friend recommended it, or that they nearly abandoned checkout over shipping cost. Those three facts change every message you send for the next year.
A post-purchase survey is the cheapest research your store will ever run, because the audience is already assembled and already paying attention.
What you learn
- Whether the buyer is the product user
- What actually triggered this purchase
- The outcome they are measuring success against
- Friction in checkout worth fixing
- Whether they want to be reminded to reorder
- Who is safe to ask for a review
Six questions worth the moment.
Ordered so that the highest-value answer arrives first, in case the customer stops after one.

Who is this order for?
Single select · required
MyselfA gift for someone elseMy household — we share itA client or my practiceThe single most valuable post-purchase question in wellness, and the one almost nobody asks. A gift purchaser who gets a replenishment reminder at day 30 will unsubscribe. Ask once, suppress forever.

What made you decide to buy this time?

Those two groups need completely different second-order strategies — and rewarding the first with more discounts is how margin quietly disappears.

Anything that almost stopped you from ordering?

Free responseThe highest-signal, lowest-effort question on this list. Buyers who just converted will happily tell you what nearly lost them — shipping cost, dosage confusion, and third-party testing come up constantly for supplement brands.

Would you like reminders when it is time to reorder?

Where to publish it.
Post-purchase surveys live or die on placement. The thank-you page and the delivery moment answer different questions.
Shopify thank-you page
The highest completion rate of any placement. The customer is already stopped, the transaction is done, and there is nothing else competing for the moment.
Order confirmation email
Embed the first question directly in the email as a Spark. One tap answers it and drops the customer into the rest of the survey.
Delivery confirmation
Trigger a second, product-experience wave a few days after fulfilment, once they have actually opened the box.
Packaging insert
A QR code on the thank-you card catches customers who never open marketing email — often your most loyal segment.
Account order history
A persistent entry point for returning customers who want to tell you how a specific order went.
Single-question Spark
If a full survey feels heavy, publish just the "who is this for" question and layer the rest on later orders through progressive profiling.
When to trigger it.
Immediately after checkout
Order experience, purchaser relationship, and purchase motivation. These are memory-dependent — accuracy degrades within hours, and the thank-you page has no competition for attention.
Three to seven days after delivery
Product experience, early results, and goal confirmation. Trigger from the Shopify fulfilment event rather than the order date, so slow shipping does not skew your data.
Only on the first order
Full survey for first-time buyers. Repeat customers should get a single Spark instead — asking a fifth-time buyer who the order is for is a signal that you have not been paying attention.
After a category-switching order
When an existing customer buys outside their usual category, re-ask the goal question. Their reason for buying has almost certainly changed.

Flows worth building
- Detractor recovery — Checkout Satisfaction of 1 or 2 routes to a human reply within one business day, not an automated apology.
- Review request — trigger only for scores of 4 and 5, seven days after delivery. Asking everyone is how you earn one-star reviews.
- Gift-purchaser suppression — exclude Purchaser Relationship = gift from all replenishment and routine content.
- Goal-based onboarding — branch the post-purchase education series on Primary Goal so a sleep buyer never receives focus content.
- Consented replenishment reminder — schedule from the customer's declared window rather than a global 30-day default.
Suggested audiences.
Optional. Signals works fully with Shopify and Klaviyo on its own — Compass adds behavioral context to these declared answers.
- Goal-Aligned Repeat Buyers — declared a goal and reordered a matching product.
- Gift Purchasers — suppressed from routine content, targeted seasonally instead.
- Discount-Motivated Buyers — bought on promotion only, for margin-recovery testing.
- At-Risk First Orders — low checkout satisfaction plus no second order.
- Advocacy Candidates — high satisfaction, two or more orders, no review left yet.
Compass joins post-purchase answers to order history and engagement, so "unhappy with checkout" becomes "unhappy with checkout and has not returned in 90 days" — an audience you can actually act on.
