Customer Profiles

Every answer belongs to a real customer.

A survey tool collects responses. Signals builds a profile — connecting what a customer told you to who they are, what they bought, and what they are likely to do next.

Identification

Known when we can be. Useful either way.

Not every respondent is signed in, and that is fine. Signals handles both cases without losing the answer.

Customer identification

When a response can be matched to a Shopify customer, Signals connects it to that customer profile.

Anonymous responses

Identity is not always available. Anonymous responses are still collected, counted, and analyzed.

Later resolution

When an anonymous respondent becomes a known customer, what they told you does not have to start over.

Merchant-owned data

Response data belongs to the merchant, with encryption in transit and at rest and configurable retention.

The Signal profile

What a Signal profile contains.

Declared preferences and commerce behavior on one record, accumulating over time.

Signal profile

Identity Matched Shopify customer
Shopify orders 12 orders · $842 LTV
Declared preferences Goal: Focus · New to category
Spark responses 4 answered
Surveys completed Product Finder · Post-Purchase
Replenishment timing Roughly every 45 days
Segments Focus seekers · VIP

Illustrative example of the fields a profile can hold.

Built from two directions at once.

Behavior tells you what a customer did. Declared preferences tell you why. A Signal profile holds both, so a segment can be built from intent rather than inference alone.

Every survey response and every Spark answer adds to the same record. Nothing has to be collected twice, and the profile gets more useful the longer a customer stays with you.

How profiles grow over time
Declared preferences

Answers become customer attributes.

What a customer chooses in a survey does not stay inside the survey. Signals turns it into a named property on the profile — ready for segmentation, personalization, and activation.

See segments and activation
  • An answer becomes a named customer property, not a row in a report.
  • Properties carry the customer’s own words about goals, routines, and interests.
  • Properties update as customers tell you more.
  • Properties can be used for segmentation inside Signals.
  • Properties can sync to Klaviyo so messages can reference them.
  • Properties contribute to Compass audiences when Compass is connected.
Shopify context

Shopify makes every answer mean more.

Signals is built around the customer data already in Shopify. Orders, products, and tags turn an answer into something you can act on commercially.

Explore the Shopify integration
  • Order history gives an answer commercial weight.
  • Products purchased explain which answers actually matter.
  • Customer tags and lifecycle place the response in context.
  • Purchase timing helps distinguish a first-time buyer from a loyalist.
  • Behavior and declared preference can disagree — and that gap is often the insight.
With Compass

One profile across the platform.

When Compass is connected, Signal profiles contribute declared preferences to the unified customer profile used for audiences, recommendations, and AI-assisted engagement.

Signals is a complete Shopify product on its own and works with Shopify and Klaviyo without Compass. Compass enhances Signals — it is never a prerequisite.
