Terms of Service
The agreement between Signals Surveys and the merchants who use it.
Last updated July 2026.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Signals Surveys ("Signals", "the Service"), provided as part of the Compass customer intelligence platform. By installing Signals, creating an account, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms on behalf of the business you represent ("you" or "Merchant"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
Signals lets a Shopify merchant create surveys and Sparks, publish them to customers, connect responses to Shopify customer and order data, analyze results, and send resulting events and profile properties to connected destinations such as Klaviyo or Compass. Signals is a complete Shopify product on its own; a Compass subscription enhances it but is not required.
We may add, change, or remove features over time. We will not materially reduce the core functionality of a paid plan during a term without notice.
2. Accounts
- You must provide accurate account information and keep it current.
- You are responsible for the activity of every user you grant access to your Signals account, and for keeping credentials confidential.
- You must be able to enter a binding contract on behalf of your business.
- Tell us promptly at privacy@signals.compass.st if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to, and not to permit anyone else to:
- Use Signals to collect data unlawfully, deceptively, or without the notices and consents your customers are entitled to.
- Use Signals to collect payment card numbers, government identifiers, financial account credentials, or health or other special category data.
- Publish surveys that are harassing, discriminatory, defamatory, or otherwise unlawful.
- Send unsolicited messages, or use responses to contact people in a way that breaches applicable marketing law.
- Attempt to access another tenant's data, probe or circumvent our security controls, or interfere with the availability of the Service.
- Reverse engineer, resell, sublicense, or white-label the Service except as we expressly permit in writing.
- Use automated means to place unreasonable load on the Service, or to scrape it.
You must also comply with Shopify's terms and, where you connect them, the terms of Klaviyo, Compass, and any other integrated service.
4. Subscriptions and billing
- Signals is offered on subscription plans described on our pricing page. Plan limits, including response volume, apply as stated there.
- Where you install Signals through the Shopify App Store, subscription charges are billed through Shopify and appear on your Shopify invoice. Shopify's billing terms, currency handling, and approval flow apply to those charges.
- Subscriptions renew automatically for successive terms until cancelled.
- Fees are exclusive of taxes unless stated otherwise. You are responsible for applicable taxes other than taxes on our income.
- Except where required by law, fees already paid are non-refundable. If you exceed a plan limit, we may ask you to upgrade or may apply overage charges disclosed in advance.
- We may change pricing for a future term with reasonable prior notice. Continued use after a price change takes effect constitutes acceptance.
5. Merchant responsibilities
You control the surveys you publish and the data you collect. You are responsible for:
- The content, wording, and targeting of every survey and Spark you publish.
- Providing your customers with the privacy notice they are entitled to, and obtaining and honoring the consents required to collect, store, and use their responses — including for any marketing you send based on those responses.
- Configuring consent gating, retention windows, and integrations appropriately for your business.
- The accuracy of any claims, offers, or incentives you make inside a survey.
- Your use of exported data once it leaves the Service.
Signals provides features that support your compliance program. It does not make you compliant, and nothing in the Service or on this website is legal advice. You should obtain your own legal advice about your obligations.
6. Intellectual property
We own the Service, including its software, design, documentation, survey templates we supply, and the Signals and Compass names and marks. These Terms grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service during your subscription. No other rights are granted.
You may use our marks only to state factually that you use Signals. We may identify you as a customer only with your permission.
If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them to improve the Service without obligation to you.
7. Data ownership
As between you and us, you own your survey configuration and the responses collected from your customers ("Merchant Data"). We process Merchant Data on your behalf to provide the Service, as described in our Privacy Policy and Data Processing Addendum. We do not sell Merchant Data, share it with other merchants, or use it to build a cross-merchant advertising or identity graph.
We may use aggregated, de-identified information that does not identify you, your customers, or your business to operate, secure, and improve the Service.
You can export Merchant Data at any time. See our security overview for the export and deletion controls available.
8. Third-party services
Signals integrates with Shopify, Klaviyo, Compass, and other services. Those services are operated by third parties under their own terms, and we are not responsible for their availability, changes to their APIs, or their handling of data once you instruct us to send it to them.
9. Service availability and support
We aim to keep the Service available and publish operational information on our status page. The Service may be unavailable during planned maintenance, or because of events outside our reasonable control, including failures of Shopify or other upstream providers. Unless a separate written service level agreement applies to your plan, the Service is provided without an availability commitment.
10. Warranty disclaimer
Except as expressly stated in these Terms, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that results, analytics, or AI-generated suggestions will be accurate or suitable for your purposes. AI-assisted output should be reviewed before you rely on it.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, neither party is liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, lost goodwill, or lost or corrupted data, even if advised of the possibility.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service is limited to the fees you paid for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
12. Indemnity
You will defend and indemnify us against third-party claims arising from the surveys you publish, the data you collect, your use of exported data, or your breach of section 3 (acceptable use) or section 5 (merchant responsibilities).
13. Suspension and termination
- You may stop using Signals at any time by cancelling your subscription and uninstalling the app.
- We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms, if your use threatens the security or availability of the Service, or if required by law or by Shopify. Where practicable we will give notice and an opportunity to cure.
- On termination, your right to use the Service ends. Export your data before you terminate. After termination, Merchant Data is deleted as described in our Privacy Policy.
- Sections on intellectual property, data ownership, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, and governing law survive termination.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. We will update the date at the top of this page and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance. If you do not accept a change, you may terminate before it takes effect.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of [governing jurisdiction to be specified], without regard to conflict of law rules, and the courts of [venue to be specified] have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising from them. If you are a consumer, mandatory protections of your local law are unaffected.
16. General
- These Terms, with the Privacy Policy and Data Processing Addendum, are the entire agreement between us regarding the Service.
- If a provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
- A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.
- You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them to an affiliate or in connection with a merger or sale of assets.
- Notices to you may be given in the app or by email to your account address.
